Problems Persist in the Residence Hall                                               By Candice Cumberbatch     12/2000

Resident advisers have the sweet life: they don't have to pay for any room or boarding and they also have a free food plan, but what do they have to go through to receive all of those privileges?
Andy Masters (sophomore-human development and family studies) has been an RA since last year second semester, and he is now the RA for the first floor boys' side. In comparing the students this year with the ones last year, he had some interesting comments. "The residents this year are just as loud as the ones last year, but the ones this year have come up with some more creative ways to cause trouble,'' said Mr. Masters.
Eric Townsend (sophomore-chemical engineering), who just recently became all RA this semester, had something bettel' to say about resident life. "It has been easy with the cooperation of my current floor, even though you will always get a freshman or two who come to school with a high school mentality," said Mr. Townsend.
"Last year, the students were more focused. Students this year seem to, because someone told them they had to. There have been a few peculiar incidents throughout the semester, like a dead animal ended up in front of someone's door, pornographic pictures being slid under people doors, condoms taped on people doors and suspicious people roaming around the building," said Tenika Anderson (sophomore information sciences and technology), the third floor girls' side RA.
Nicole Pumell (sophomore-political science) is also a girls' side RA, but she is for the second floor. She has been an RA for one semester. "This year as an RA has been hell, but it's getting better. I think the freshmen this year are not as mature as the ones last year. Don't get me wrong you have a few that are mature this year, but for the majority I do not think they are more mature," said Ms. Purnell.
"I have been an RA currently for one year and two semesters. This year had its challenges and its ups and downs. I have encountered problems this year that I have never encountered before. Both incidents, I had to wake up at 3 am in the morning -- one involved vomit and the other involved a dead rodent in front of my residents' doors, which was quite immature and childish," said Arnon Bazemore (sophomore-architectural engineering). He is the second floor RA, for the boys' side.
Tanill Watkins (freshman-biology and education) of the Residence Hall lives on the third floor of the girls' side. "From what I heard from the sophomores in the building, last year was mostly fun. It wasn't all these dumb pranks, and I'm very upset that I had to come into the building right when it all began," said Ms. Watkins.
"I think that last year was a much better time to live in the dorms, because this year, the students seem like they're not here to learn anymore. All the students this year want to do is start trouble and bicker back and forth," said Noora Rodrigquez (sophomore-political science) who also lives on the third floor of the Residence Hall.
