Penn State McKeesport recently
announced five students have been accepted for admission into the Schreyer
Honors College. These newly accepted scholars are: Mary Kay Antonelli
(sophomore-international business), Lisa Hazinski (sophomore-aerospace
engineering), Sara Korinko (sophomore-animal bioscience), Nicole Dirling
(sophomore-political science) and Peter Hammond (freshman-aerospace
engineering).
According to the Undergraduate Degree Programs
Bulletin, the Schreyer Honors College is a university-wide honors program.
It is designed to offer students more demanding classes to better prepare
them for graduate study or a profession. The program also promotes civic
responsibility and international studies.
Mr. Hammond received an invitation to join the program
during his admission to Penn State. The four sophomore scholars were
selected based on superior academic performance during their freshman year
and recommendations from Penn State faculty members.
Ms. Antonelli said, "As a returning adult student to
college, I was very honored to be accepted into the Schreyer Honors
College. As a single parent who works full-time, it is not always easy for
me to make my education the priority and find the necessary time to study.
"My acceptance into Schreyer was an acknowledgement of my efforts. There
are great benefits to acceptance, such as priority scheduling, but I most
appreciate the counseling and advice of those involved in the honors
program, especially Dr. Hauser. Although, unfortunately I will not be able
to continue my education at University Park, I feel that my acceptance
into Schreyer will be recognized," she said.
Participants in the program work with faculty
advisers to complete undergraduate research projects. They must take three
honors courses. "We are fortunate at Penn State McKeesport to have a large
number of honor students," said Mrs. Dorothy Ikach, public information
assistant.
