Review: 'You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch'                                             By Vernon Cox     12/2000

Growing up, one of my favorite holiday traditions was to sit in front of the television with my brother and watch Dr. Seuss's "How The Grinch Stole Christmas." It became a time-honored tradition for many families when the Dr. Seuss book was brought to life in 1962 as an animated feature. The Grinch hating all the Who's down in Whoville plots to steal Christmas from under their noses. I've watched it loyally since I was two.
When I heard there was going to be a live-action remake, I was split in two ways. One thought it would be better to leave a classic alone, while the other thought it would be fun to see the Grinch come to life. When 1 heard that Jim Carrey was going to play the Grinch, my optimism increased. Plus, 1 was a fan of the director, Ron Howard, from his work on the movies "Apollo 13' and "Ransom." I went to the theater with an open mind and hopes that it would be good.
What I saw in that next 90 minutes was one of the best family movies ever. The scenery was beautiful and just how I pictured it would be in the real world. Jim Carrey proved more than ever why he's a genius. His brand of comedy complimented the Grinch perfectly. He brought the character to life in grand fashion. Young actress Taylor Momsen was perfect for the role of Cindy LouWho, although she is way Older than two. The cute, sweet child factor is done perfectly by the up and coming little actress.
The movie is unique in that we get the reason behind why the Grinch hates Christmas, unlike the animated feature. We finally get to know why his heart is two sizes too small. We learn about what it was like for the Grinch as a child. We get to see how little Cindy steps up to help the Grinch and try to sweeten up his sour disposition.
The first half of the movie is a fun ride through the town of Whoville and the insane humor of the Grinch set to a magical backdrop. The second half has the same thing, but we are treated to the classic story of how the Grinch loots Whoville, finds a way to grow his heart three sizes, returns the gifts and gets to carve the Roast Beast.
All in all, I have to say this was one of the best holiday movies I've had the pleasure of seeing. It will become a holiday classic and make the legend of the late, great Dr. Seuss grow even bigger. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I suggest running to your local cinema and partaking in this remake. It's for all ages to enjoy. It's pure magic on the big screen. Now, would everyone be so kind as to join me in a rousing rendition of"You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch?"
