Weather Q&A With Michael Fontana                                                        By Michael Fontana       4/20/01

Q: After spring begins, the daylight period continues to lengthen until when?
A: The first day of summer.

Q: What are ana fronts?
A: They are active fronts where air is mainly ascending.

Q: How do you time Thunderstorms?
A: As light travels a hundred thousand times faster than sound so the sound of thunder arrives well after the sight of the flash that caused it.  the rule to find how far the flash was away is: Count the seconds between the flash and thunder and divide by 5 = distance in miles (or divide by 3 for km).

So try this out next time your watching a thunderstorm.

Q: What are sea-breezes?
A: These are winds that blow from sea to land during the day and for most temperate latitude coasts a wind of 10 knots or more.

Q: Does rain ever start as snow?
A: Yes, all rain does start as snow even in the summer months.  The upper levels of the atmosphere are cold enough to support snow.  As the snow falls closer to the surface, it will go over to all rain.

Weather Side-bar

This winter season proved to be one of the coldest winters in weather history.  Temperatures this winter were well below normal for most of the winter.  Precipitation was also well below normal, it was recorded as the 13th driest winter on record..  Snowfall recorded at Pittsburgh International Airport thus far is just about 26 inches well below the normal amount of snow that we normally get.  From this deficit it might cause some drought conditions this summer, but time will only tell.
