Sex in the Cyber City                                                                                    By Seth Flesch          4/20/01
In today’s society, sexually is a very open issue.  People seem too careless about whom they sleep with and whom they tell about it.  Some people even take it to the next level and televise their sexually over the Internet for money.
This raises a lot of questions.  How can someone participate in pornography?  Why would someone do this?  Don’t they feel uncomfortable  with people watching them have sex?  Is this legal?  Fortunately I had a chance to sit down and discuss these issues with someone from Penn State McKeesport who participate in internet porn.
Our subject, who we will call Dirk, has been performing intercourse on the Internet for about six months.  When asked why he does this, he replied, “Because I get a kick out of knowing people watch me, and it plays well also.”  In fact, people pay three dollars per minute to watch him perform.
“Everyone has got a gift, so why not make money for it, especially if you enjoy it!”  The fact that he is comfortable with his body and sexual performance makes it real easy to do what he does.  Also, he exclaimed that, “Knowing people are watching drives my performance to higher levels!”
When it comes to the legality of Internet porn, Dirk told me what he does is perfectly legal, as long as age documentation is provided.  All people participating on the screen must send a photo-copy of their ID to the owners of the site, proving they are at least 18 years old.  Also, all viewers are supposed to be 18 or older, but there is no way to enforce that yet.  Furthermore, to protect the participants, Dirk informed me that anyone reading this article will not be able to view him because his performances are blocked in Pennsylvania.
After the interview, Dirk asked me how I would feel about people viewing me having sex over the internet.  First of all, I feel this could harm my future if my “performances” got in the wrong hands.  More importantly, I feel it is my business what I do in my bedroom.  I do not look at sex as a way of making money.  I look at sex as away of sharing feelings that cannot be expressed in words.  Sex is a very intimate and personal activity for me, and I would not want to share it with anyone but my partner.
Although I would not want to participate in Internet porn.  I an not saying I feel it is wrong.  When it comes right down to it, it’s a persons choice what they want to do, and no one else has a right to tell then when, where, and how to have sex.
